PORTA is Raymund "Rann" Golamco (of DRIP) on guitars and vocals, and Emorej on everything else. Porta started off as a side project of songwriter Rann. He wrote the songs on a 4-track cassette recorder and distributed it to his musician friends to mangle and remix as they saw fit. This then is but one offering of the results, with sample manipulator Emorej taking rhythmic helm of these songs and turning them into an alluring mixture of funky, Bono Vox-like vocals, Jon Spencer Blues...

Switchboard Of Souls is the brainchild of Christopher Quintos, a Fresno CA- based electronic musician who stirs darkwave and industrial music into a frothy mix of 80s new wave and gothic synthesizertunes. The 6-song, 42 minute album "eko-lo-kashen" is a moody, gothic collection of undulating darkness and pop brilliance, modern machine noise and antiseptic vocals, past and present. All that is old is new again, this time with more feeling.

Nykto by Acid42, is a series of tunes which comprise the original soundtrack to the 12-minute independent short film of the same title, directed by Elvert dela Cruz Bañares, which in turn, was loosely based on a poem entitled "Darkness" by Arris Rivera. The music is a mix of ethnic and electronic, dark and light melodies, silence and rhythm, meandering into hope and fulfillment, as eventually all darkness must pass. The music was created by Acid42 (Lionel Valdellon) without having...

Once again, the samplist known as Emorej pits his Acid Pro skills against vocal loops, 4-on-the-floor kickdrums and all sorts of fine funky riffs to come up with a chunky mix of vocal house, trance, drum n bass, breakbeats and even a jazzy downtempo number or two. Equal parts Dance Dance Revolution, Moby, C+C Music Factory and Deee-Lite/Towa Tei, this is one Potpourri that sure smells funky as a llama's ass.

Think of bouncing balls, building blocks, and nursery rhymes, and what you get is KODOMO (which in Japanese means "child"), a collection of 4 traditional Japanese children's songs, given a funky new synthpop spin by Japanese vocalist Yu:Mi Calderon and Filipino musician Acid42 (Lionel Valdellon). The bonus 5th song "Everybody Lies", however, is a darker take on relationships written by the collaborating duo.

Down With The New is David Chens second album and first collection of electronic-flavored music tracks. He combines elements of jazz, house, J-pop, Latin, and jam band, fusing them into a wicked combination of insane solos, and frenzied beats that no General MIDI sequencist would dare dream up. This is an electronic/jazz fusion for the schizophrenic, at times lush and at times jagged.

Five tunes by Acid42 [Lionel Valdellon] which combine ethnic instrument samples and tribal folksong from the Philippines, with modern beats and electronic arrangements. Think ethnic electronica, or ethnotronica. "Madlangkanta" literally means "song of the masses" in Filipino, referring to the folksong origin of some of the melodies and song structures used in this album.

Cocolulu is geeky synthpop at its best. And 8-Bit Love combines a 20-something's view on life in post-Eraserheads Manila, and is filled with bright lyrics and squeaky synths. Strangely enough, the music sounds like it was lifted from a whole lot of 80s synthpop groups, which either tells you that the synth is back, or, even the youth of today are caught in a timewarp. Included in the release is a remix by Acid42 for "Panda Extravaganza".

Sullen minimalist downtempo tunes flavored with a little IDM/glitch put together by a classically-trained electronica composer who takes inspiration from the Philippines and transforms it into audio snapshots of decay and beauty. The standout is the all-too-brief "Paradise Island" which pits lush soundtrack strings with ambient jungle sounds. Ikaw Maganda (which literally means "you beautiful" in Filipino) is Chromer's first QED release, but definitely not his last.

What do you call the deep, dark, dubby downtempo music that scares away mainstream fans by its apparent inaccessibility (it's difficult to search for song titles written in ascii characters, for one thing) and its occultish overtones? Well, some quarters call this music witch house, crypt hop, or even dub. We call it the soundtrack music for the insane clowns in your mind. Kulam+++Barang is a one-man witch house producer who finds inspiration in slowed down vocal samples, hip hop beats, and...

A moving tribute to marriage and lasting relationships in 2 flavors: frenetic drum&bass, and funky acid jazz. The song was commissioned by Mon Guinto for the birthday of his wife Karen in 2004. Lyrics, music and production by Acid42 (Lionel Valdellon) and vocals by Cholo Mallillin.

Unearthed from hidden files comes this track, a seamless 42-minute live set by Wolfmann [Wilfrid Hernandez] as a solo electronica artist, recorded at a March 19, 2003 gig in Paradiso Bar, Quezon City, Philippines. Hard-hitting breaks by Korg Electribes and SP-202 sampler, with enough verve to out-chemical the Chemical Brothers and smash some pumpkins.

Switchboard Of Souls' melodic surreal synths and guitar conjure images of dark blossoming flowers, his music reviving gothic '80s with 21st century technology. These dreams have been shaken, not stirred by a master of moody soundscapes. This is new new wave without the banal poetry.

Think of menacing, grinding riffs which hearken back to mid-90s Ministry and the dark, brooding stillness of ancient ruins and maybe you'll get some sense of Switchboard Of Soul's latest darkwave opus: Dead Of Night. Once again SOS (aka Christopher Quintos) takes his love for the sinister-sounding side of electronic music and assembles a pleasant audio trip which takes you from night-time darkness straight into day.

Another synthtronic release from the understated master of electric new wave moods. Switchboard of Souls unleashes a three-song EP that could very well have been a Depeche Mode underground release.

On his third EP release on QED Records, Evo Evolver (aka Araknidus aka Philippine dnb musician Myke Madriaga) dishes out melodic two-step and drum&bass replete with expansive atmospheres and cinematic elements. There's even a hint of the wobbly aggressive bass made famous by dubstep artists of every age and stripe right alongside lush and melodic strings. Evo Evolver creates smooth, cosmopolitan drum&bass music rife with tension. In his music you hear opposing poles struggling for...

Direct from Moscow, Russia comes this downtempo EP entitled Miracle. LastEDEN (aka Kirill Zverev) composes tranquil chillout music rife with melody. The music is made up of classical harmonies, lush synth washes and subtle beats and its end result is a direct transfusion of calm and relaxation into your cerebral cortex. The LastEDEN project is his solution to world peace: listen to music that soothes your soul. File under: downtempo, chillout, ambient. Sounds like: Cafe del Mar, Jose Padilla,...

Paper Scratcher is Jonathan Roy Galve, an independent Philippine electronica musician creating alien soundscapes on his home computer. "As Time Goes Back" is an IDM-esque reflection filled with polyrhythmic multilayered madness, and is one of his first published works. He counts among his influences Eat Static, Telefon Tel Aviv, Squarepusher, Roni Size, Pink Floyd, and world music.

Musique Pour L'ame (Music for the Soul) is ten tracks and 45+ minutes of melodic and harmonious downtempo electronica. This is pleasant music that flows from track to track, often within the same BPM range, recalling golden days of the past while inspiring dark visions of the future. What Russia-based musician and producer Charmant Juliette (Charming Juliette, in English) has done in this release is build musical structures far removed from the industrial glitch and dark noise of her alter-ego...

Downtempo never sounded so smooth. What Manila-based producer Demolee does in his first full-length album, Stars Falling, is to create pretty fairy tales of melody and unhurried beats. The resulting 10-track album is chock full of jazzy relaxation that transcends country borders. Think Cafe del Manila instead of Cafe del Mar. Think of lazy breezes, meandering road trips, and star gazing on hot summer nights and you get the point. Demolee (aka Franco Madrid) once again proves that electronic...

String sections, the main ingredient for every Hollowood movie soundtrack, are up front and in focus on this EP by Manila-based producer Paosin the Well. His effective use of string libraries and samples coupled with steady beats results in a brooding but groovy downtempo EP that is equal parts action flick, spy movie and horror film rolled into one. This 5-track EP then is a form of homage to pop culture, quite possibly with the message:"Pop culture is dead. Long live Pop Culture!"...

notinthemoodfordancing takes synths and loops and mixes in bouncy hip hop beats to create electropop that squelches and fizzes and floats and sputters and echoes in your head. Year II is a 4-track EP comin in at 16 minutes in length, but bringing you to a cool, laidback mental atmosphere. While his influences include El Ten Eleven, Squareone, and our very own Spazzkid, we say his music is more like the future sound of lotion. File under: downtempo, electropop, electro.

Silverfilter (Cyril Sorongon) used to gig around the Philippines using a formidable array of Korg Electribes and various hardware. Before he saw the light and switched over to a software and MIDI controller setup, he recorded for posterity this full-on live dance set which features the techno, breaks, and hard-hitting house styles he's come to be known for. Over more than 2 hours, Silverfilter treats us to his energetic spirit where he bleeds electronic dance into our ears via his hardware....

Amazing how chance leads to creativity. Single Eye Perspective hooked up his guitar to his laptop running VSTIs and started recording everything using his desktop computer. The long, flowing recordings were then edited into this 4-track EP which is at times charming, and at times folksy, but always emotive. The melodies never leave you. And maybe that is the genius of Dear My Friends. DETAILS 4 MP3s encoded at 320kbps 44.1kHz stereo. Total Run time: 13:25
